Recently, the Serbian mass media, strictly controlled by the prevailing Bolshevik currents in this republic, have showered Croatians with insulting epithets with the goal of spreading fear and slowing down the democratic processes in Croatia. The expression "maspok" is a contraction of "masovni pokret" meaning mass movement. It originated in 1971 after the felling of the liberal leadership of the Croatian Communists by Tito.
